September was a month full of great speeches. Speakers and Evaluators from our club made further progress in their Toastmasters journey by participating in various events at club and area level.
Club and Area Speech Contests
It’s Contest Season! On 1 Sep, Humorous Speech and Evaluation Speech Contests were held in our club. It was a great opportunity for our members to further develop their speaking skills by competing and/or observing other competent speakers. Five members competed in the Humorous Speech Contest and six competed in the Evaluation Speech Contest. Congratulations to all keen participants!

A special “thank you” to Contest Chair Alice Wong for organizing such successful event. The event was made possible by the support from judges and helpers from other Toastmasters Club in the community. Furthermore, efforts from our members to judge or as demo speakers in other Toastmasters clubs was much appreciated.
Top two winners from each category represented our club at the Area G1 Contests held on 27 Sep. A group of our members attended to support Ai Ai Ong, Andrew and Sue Yen. It was a rewarding experience to learn from accomplished speakers from Area G1 and G2. Andrew is the Champion of Area G1 Humorous Speech Contest 2014 and Sue Yen is the Champion of Area G1 Evaluation Speech Contest 2014. They both will compete in the Division G Contests on Sunday 12 Oct at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Speakathon cum New Member Induction
Speak-a-thon is finally back to our club! It has been a while (perhaps several years) since our club had such Speech Marathon. On 29 Sep, we had a “mini” Speakathon with 5 speeches followed by 5 evaluations. Lisa Yip, Raj Thammineni, Sheri Chan introduced themselves to the club with their Ice Breaker speech. Alice Wong employed plenty of body languages in her 5th project in the Competent Communication manual. Rita Tsui led by example and gave a speech from the Advanced Manual: Special Occasion Speeches. Speaking of ice-breaking, Ann Lee gave her very first evaluation at the meeting!
Seven new members were formally welcomed to the club in the New Member Induction held by our VP of Membership, Alan Kwong. New and exiting member affirmed their Toastmaster’s Promise in their formal ceremony. Clement, Calvin, Sheri, Raj, Lisa, Eugene and Sue Yen, welcome come to our family!
Cafe. Waiting. Speeches
To support our new members in crafting their initial speeches, our seasoned members Ben Fung ACB and Alan Kwong CC organized an informal coffee session on 11 Sep. Participants discussed and brainstormed ideas for the first four projects in the Competent Communication manual. Looking forward to more great speeches and more cafe sessions.
