Think you’re great at speaking on the stage? Wait until you try to do a standup comedy!
On Monday night, April 29, we were thrilled and grateful to all members, Toastmasters, guests, club presidents, and district leaders who came to support us for our second annual “Toastmasters Standup Comedy Showcase,” which was co-organized by HK Achievers, Competitive Speakers TMC, and the Hong Kong Toastmasters Club.
– A full house of 90 people attended, including 11 presidents from 11 different Toastmasters clubs, as well as the district leaders: District 89 Director, Program Quality Director and Club Growth Director.
– 6 speakers from three hosting clubs delivered humorous speeches and competed for two grand prizes: Best Comedian Award and Audience’s Favorite Award. President of CSC Jimmy Yau won both awards
– Guests and members came to the stage, performed mini standup comedy, and competed for the Funniest Speaker Award, which was won by Stephen Lau, President of Public Officers TMC.
It was an eye-opening night full of laughs and insights. Our special guest and judge, Jami Gong, the founder of the first full-time comedy club in Asia (TakeOut Comedy Club), dished out some tough love along with some invaluable advice on improving our humorous and improvisation skills from a professional comedian’s perspective.
Judging from the overwhelming support, enthusiasm, and laughs we all received in this special event, our District may reconsider holding the Humorous Speech Contest again next year to let our Toastmasters showcase their talents.
